Brake Safety Week is part of the Operation Airbrake program, an international campaign for brake safety, sponsored by the CVSA. These groups partner with the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for this annual event.

During Brake Safety Week, inspections will be conducted on large trucks and buses by law enforcement agencies in order to improve commercial motor vehicle brake safety. This outreach and enforcement program also seeks to educate those in the industry about the importance of functioning brake systems.

Since the program began in 1998, CVSA states that over 3.4 million brakes have been inspected, and 18,817 brakes were inspected during 2015 Brake Safety Week alone. Out of all out-of-service violations cited during roadside inspections, brake-related violations are recorded most often at 43% according to the International Roadcheck campaign in 2015.
