Trimble's ConnectedDriver App Helps Quality Carriers Enable Driver Mobility
Find solution to support driver mobility by improving communication and access to information both in and out of the cab.
Quality Carriers (QCI) has always realized the role of mobile technology in improving business operations. With a 2,500-truck fleet that operates the largest bulk tank truck network in North America, QCI was an early adopter of handheld devices to allow drivers to stay connected.
In the early 2000s, when widespread use of these devices was still in its infancy, QCI created a mobile-first environment for their drivers. This strategy allowed drivers to be more efficient—both inside and outside of the cab.
Technology has changed dramatically since those early days of mobile technology, with increasingly advanced devices and better connectivity. In a rapidly-evolving environment, QCI looked for a partner to deploy the latest technology and find more ways to streamline their business.
Leveraging existing data
QCI turned to PeopleNet in 2014 for their eDriver Logs®, which automates hours of service (HOS) to reduce violations and increase safety. They also implemented PeopleNet’s Speed Monitoring, giving them driver analytics to identify high-risk drivers and habitual speeders to promote coaching opportunities to improve driver behavior.
With all of these solutions in place, QCI wanted to leverage this data to expand the mobility of their drivers. Previously relying on a company- maintained site that drivers could access, QCI wanted to improve how their drivers received information: enter PeopleNet’s ConnectedDriverTM app.
Available on both iOS and Android devices, ConnectedDriver is a companion app to the PeopleNet system. This app gives drivers the ability to receive important dispatch updates, check messages from the back office and view their HOS totals on their mobile devices.
One of the major benefits of ConnectedDriver is it takes the burden off of QCI to internally develop and maintain an app. Working with PeopleNet gives them the latest technology and tools to enhance how they serve their customers.
“The ConnectedDriver app fits in perfectly with our mobile-first strategy,” said Cliff Dixon, Vice President of Information Technology at QCI. “The clean, easy-to-use interface allows us to harness data and encourage driver mobility.”
Staying connected, not tethered
As one of the largest users of ConnectedDriver, QCI continues to work with PeopleNet on additional ways to use technology to better the driver experience. In the meantime, the benefits of this app are apparent.
“In an increasingly connected world, drivers need remote access to information,” said Dixon. “This app gives them the freedom to live their lives off the clock and still be prepared for their next day at work.”

As an early leader in driver mobility, QCI is continuing that legacy with PeopleNet. ConnectedDriver helps strike a balance to allow for the flow of important information, inside or outside of the cab.
“PeopleNet not only helps our drivers stay in the know, but it helps us increase operational efficiencies to better serve our customers,” said Dixon.
