Shaw Industries Transportation

Tirmble, A Trusted Advisor for Shaw

The Challenge:
Find a technology partner that offers direct access and personal service to help communicate with and track trucks.

The Solution:
PeopleNet®, eDriver Logs®, Tailored Solutions, Speed Monitoring, Vehicle Management

You could say that Shaw Industries Transportation and PeopleNet grew up together over the last nine years, forging a relationship characterized by personal interaction. “It’s the exact kind of a relationship we try to create with all of our technology vendors,” says Shaw Manager of Fleet Technology Randy Black. “Direct access and personal service was a primary consideration when we chose PeopleNet to help us communicate with and track our trucks.”

Driver efficiency, back-office productivity Black adds that PeopleNet is a trusted core vendor, providing the communication backbone for Shaw’s transportation organization. “In fact, at least half of our driver training focuses on PeopleNet, which has eliminated many administrative tasks for drivers. In addition, we’ve streamlined many of our back-office processes with PeopleNet, which has significantly reduced staff to a single person.”

Shaw has also taken advantage of PeopleNet Tailored Solutions to create an application that ensures accurate deliveries. Using a Symbol MC9090 scanner, the driver scans each product that’s being delivered at a specific customer location. If the wrong product is scanned, it lets the driver know. The customer signs a mobile device, which communicates completion to the back office.

Managing MPG

Shaw uses Vehicle Management as a coaching tool for developing driving habits that help achieve MPG goals. Black says, “The engine control module provides valuable information that we monitor daily. If one driver’s MPG is less than others who drive the same model type, we take a closer look to determine if there’s a mechanical or driver issue. The same is true for a driver’s sudden decrease in MPG.”

“Safety and risk management is on everybody’s mind these days with CSA (Compliance Safety Accountability), and PeopleNet is a great asset in this area.”

-Randy Black, Manager of Fleet Technology, Shaw Industries Transportation

Honing safety
Shaw was an electronic logs pioneer, having beta tested PeopleNet eDriver Logs in 2002. “Log errors are a thing of the past. If there are any issues, we know immediately. As a result, each month without any major log violations means a substantial reduction in administrative time following up and investigating. That’s a big deal for a fleet our size. Plus, the drivers are happy with the time they save in roadside inspections. Electronic logs really carry a lot of weight.”

“We really do everything we can to help our drivers be professionals, not administrators. It typically takes people time to adapt to change, but our drivers have proven that PeopleNet is easy to learn and very intuitive,” Black says.

Future plans

  • Reduce in-cab driver distraction
  • Create mobile office environment in the cab
  • Driver access to videos
  • Continue to reduce paperwork
  • Create driver portal
  • Implement eDVIR
